Research and Academic Interests

Dr. Lewin's research interests include the following: 1) Analgesia and procedural sedation. We are investigating how the nervous system's acquired and intrinsic sensitivity to exogenous sources of CO2 affects the predisposition to apnea during procedural sedation. We have both human laboratory and clinical research studies running concurrently; 2) Accident and illness during travel to remote and extreme environments. We have just completed a prospective study of illnesses and injury occurring during six scientific expeditions to Gobi Desert regions in the Republic of Mongolia and Inner Mongolia (China); 3) Parasitoid-induced nociception in larval Manduca sexta. The tobacco hornworm is the caterpillar form of a sphinx moth. Parasitoid wasps lay eggs in the body cavity of the caterpillar altering the defensive behavior of the caterpillar. Fundamental aspects of nociception (pain-like responses) can be studied through simple behavioral tests and pharmacological manipulation of the nervous system.
