Residents will be paid according to the updated University of California salary scales, effective July 1, 2016:

Additional Incentives

  • Membership to SAEM, ACEP, AAEM, and EMRA 
  • All PGY-4 residents will be funded to attend the national ACEP meeting (Oct 2017 = Washington, DC) 
  • Business cards for each EM resident 
  • Up to $250 reimbursement per year for residency education fund (e.g. textbooks) 
  • $916.67 monthly (taxable) housing allowance to help off-set the higher cost of living in San Francisco
  • Reimbursement for California medical license fee
  • Reimbursement for USMLE Step 3 examination fee
  • Up to $60 per 2-week period payment for Bilingual Translational Service only during clinical time at ZSFG 
  • Up to $300 reimbursement per year for ZSFG book fund (e.g., journal subscription, stethoscope, etc.)

Each resident will receive a contract prior to starting residency.

Vacation Time

4 weeks per academic year

Millberry Union

Millberry Union is located on the north side of Parnassus Avenue, across from UCSF Medical Center. Millberry Union presents cultural, recreational, and fitness programs to the campus community and general public. Millberry Union also provides a variety of facilities and services including a bookstore, fitness center, barbershop, sundries and gift stores, flower stand, a variety of food service options, computer store, copy service, meeting rooms, music and entertainment rooms, and ticket services.


Residents on duty have access to food services 24 hours/day at all institutions.

UCSF Medical Center

Residents have access to a variety of food services during the daytime. Evening meals are provided for Housestaff who are on call at the hospital. Debit cards are used at the Moffitt-Long campus and are valid at a wide range of vendors. The hours of operation of the different food services varies among the numerous sites and also from weekday to weekend.

San Francisco General Hospital 

Food Services are provided for Housestaff who are on-call at the hospital. Housestaff must present an ID badge that indicating that they are a “Resident”. Temporary meal passes may be obtained from the Dean’s Office at SFGH through the individual’s Department. The hours of operation of the cafeteria may vary, but are well advertised. If the cafeteria is closed for an extended period, alternative food services are provided to Housestaff.


  • UCSF residents will be eligible to apply for a free VPN access to online journals and medical search engines (eg. MD Consult, UpToDate) through the UCSF library. You can access these from home.
  • Located at 530 Parnassus Avenue, the UCSF Kalmanovitz Library plays a critical role at UCSF, serving not only as a repository for scientific information, but also as a center for the development of new knowledge bases and the hub of campus instructional computing. The collection covers almost every aspect of the health sciences, with substantial resources in the biological, physical, and social sciences. GALEN II, the Library's online computer network, is the link to the UCSF Library Catalog, the California Digital Library, a collection of databases, and Pub MED. From this main site, users      have access to support systems including research assistance, instructional resources, and updates about the library’s collections and current events on campus. Links to phone directories and other UC websites and libraries is available.
  • As of 2011, the UCSF Library now features the Kanbar Center -- an entire wing dedicated to state-of-the-art simulation, clinical skills labs, and telemedicine.
  • The Barnett-Briggs Library of the San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center, located at 22nd and Potrero Streets, maintains a small collection on clinical medicine and health sciences.


All campuses of UCSF suffer from serious traffic and parking congestion. To facilitate travel among campus locations, frequent free shuttle bus service is available throughout the day (Monday through Friday) between UCSF Moffitt-Long Hospital and SFGH.
