Ryan Wilson

Biography: 

Ryan P. Wilson, PA-C, MSPAS, MPH is a Senior Physician Assistant who joined UCSF Medical Center's Department of Emergency Medicine in August 2019. He currently holds the title of Chair of Professional Development for the Advanced Practice Board where he has leadership oversight over the Chairs of New APP Onboarding, Mentorship, Wellness and Retention, and Professional Evaluations. He previously held the position of Senior Physician Assistant in Surgery as the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program Coordinator from November 2014 to August 2019.

As an Emergency Medicine Senior Physician Assistant at the UCSF Parnassus Emergency Department's Clinical Decision Unit. Ryan manages a 10-bed 24-hour observation unite caring for patients with complex multifactorial conditions. He Cares for patients suffering from conditions including MI, unstable angina, syncope, heart failure, end-stage cancer, chronic kidney disease on dialysis, anemia requiring blood transfusions, transplant complications, TIA and strokes, acute asthma exacerbations, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis, COPD exacerbations, COVID-19, severe electrolyte imbalances, GI bleeds, cystic fibrosis, complex wound care including: cellulitis, pressure ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, etc. As well as manageing patient's medication reconciliations including complex geriatric patients with polypharmacy complications.

During his 5 year tenure with the Bariatric Surgery team he participated in advanced minimally invasive (Laparoscopic) cases, robotic operations utilizing UCSF's da Vinci Xi Surgical System, endoscopic procedures and open bariatric revisional surgeries alongside Drs. Stanley Rogers, Jonathan Carter, Andrew Posselt, and Matthew Lin. Additionally, he 1st assisted in a variety of general surgery, MIS and robotic cases as needed (e.g. Paraesophageal hernia repairs, Nissen fundoplication, esophagectomy, simple and complex ventral and inguinal hernia repairs, appendectomies, and cholecystectomies etc.).

Wilson has lead the UCSF Bariatric Program's success through collaboration with the Director of Bariatric Surgery and over his tenure at UCSF has guided the Bariatric Surgery Program through 2 national Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) recertification cycles each achieving the maximum accreditation period of 3 years and maximum designation as a Comprehensive Center (Center of Excellence). He helped launch The Robotic Surgery Program at Parnassus. Through his leadership and dedicated efforts the Bariatric Surgery Program has been granted the prestigious title of UCSF Destination Program. The program continues to flourish and grow with the new hire of the LVN Bariatric Coordinator and a 2nd Bariatric Physician Assistant. Prior to transfering to the ED Ryan helped secure a 50,000 dollar annual marketing budget to ensure the continued growth of the bariatric program and further enable it can continue to aid patients in need for years to come.

In collaboration with team members, Wilson launched the novel "Pathways to Weight Loss Surgery Clinic" to streamline the process from new patient appointment to bariatric surgery. In addition Wilson lead the UCSF Bariatric Surgery Program's growth by helping to establish Bariatric Surgery Outreach Clinics and through countless quality improvement initiatives such as the MBSAQIP's national Decreasing Readmissions through Opportunities Provided (DROP) Program, UCSF's Meds to Beds Program, assisting in research projects, updating and developing new patient education materials, and by training new hire Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and other staff as well as through assisting with the education of Residents and Medical Students.

Prior to joining UCSF Wilson practiced emergency medicine at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center's level one trauma center in San Jose, CA. He then moved to three emergency departments working concurrently at CPMC, St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco, CA, Sutter Santa Rosa Medical Center in Santa Rosa, CA, and Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport, CA. He also brings with him skills in wound care and occupational health from his time at Kentfield Specialty and Rehabilitation Hospital. Wilson is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. As well, he is an active member of the following professional organizations: California Academy of Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants, American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Wilson graduated from Touro University, CA with dual Masters of Science Degrees in Physician Assistant Studies (MSPAS) and Public Health (MPH). During his rigorous graduate education he excelled not only in academics but also in leadership as the College of Health Sciences Class President where he had oversight responsibilities over the Physician Assistant and Public Health Classes. He completed his extensive graduate level clinical training at several hospitals and private practices with diverse patient populations throughout California and Nevada including highly sought after rotations at Kaiser Fremont Center for Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery & Laparoscopic Bariatric Specialty Center and a world renown plastic surgery rotation with Dr. Andrew Ordon and Dr. Ritu Chopra in Beverly Hills, CA.
