The UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Emergency Department treats infants, children and adolescents with serious illnesses or injuries. As part of Oakland's only children's hospital, we provide the highest-quality emergency care in a remarkable facility designed just for kids.  The Oakland ED is certified as a level 1 trauma center by the American College of Surgeons and is the only state-designated Pediatric Critical Care Center in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. This distinction marks us as a center of excellence in all areas of pediatric care, from emergency care and intensive care through rehabilitation services.  We are open 24 hours a day, every day.

Leapfrog recognized UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland as a Top Children’s Hospital, while the UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights and UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion were recognized as Top Teaching Hospitals.

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals Rank Among Nation’s Best for 2025-2026

UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals tied again as the best in Northern California for pediatric care in the 2025-2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals list. 

This is the eighth year in a row that UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals have been recognized among the nation’s best children’s hospitals in all specialty areas. The Oakland and San Francisco hospitals are ranked together as one entity, reflecting the comprehensive system of pediatric care that UCSF Health provides to families and communities in the Bay Area and beyond. The integration of the two hospitals supports a stronger infrastructure for high-quality clinical services and expands access to seamless, equitable care for patients on both sides of the Bay.
