UCSF Department of Emergency Medicine Gives 16 Presentations at SAEM24, Receives 2024 Outstanding Department Award for Excellence and Innovation in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) was well-represented at the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEMDrs. Starr Knight, Peter Sokolove, Robert Rodriguez, and Evelyn Porter accept the 2024 Outstanding Department Award for Excellence and Innovation in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) Annual Meeting, held in Phoenix, Arizona, from May 14-17. Members of our department gave 16 presentations across the conference’s four days of programming on a range of topics in academic emergency medicine (full list below).

In addition to a robust speaking presence, our department was honored to receive the 2024 Outstanding Department Award for Excellence and Innovation in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This award honors an emergency medicine department that has shown significant support for DEI through organizational initiatives that address the recruitment, development, and advancement of its physicians, and promoting equity, diversity, opportunity, and inclusion.

At UCSF, this includes programs like our Summer Emergency Medicine Fellowship for Underrepresented Minorities in Medicine, which provides mentorship and research training in emergency medicine for Latino and Black medical students.

“We also continue to reach out to medical associations that cater to students and medical professionals from excluded backgrounds,” says Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Dr. Starr Knight. “In [2021 and 2022], at least 60 percent of residents have been from marginalized groups [groups known to be historically excluded from medicine, including racial, ethnic and gender minorities] and 30 percent have been first-generation college students.”

For the 2022-2023 resident class, the percentage of residents from applicants historically under-represented in medicine was nearly 52 percent, inclusive of Vietnamese and LGBTQIA+ residents.

Dr. Starr Knight, who is also the department's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion professor accepted the award at "SAEM24" alongside Department Chair and Emergency Medicine Endowed Professor, Dr. Peter Sokolove; Vice Chair for Clinical Research and Professor of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Robert Rodriguez; and Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Evelyn Porter (pictured from left to right).
