EM Administration Fellowship

The UCSF Department of Emergency Medicine offers a one- or two-year administrative fellowship (Master's degree or equivalent required for two-year fellowship). Administrative fellows will gain training in quality improvement, research, patient safety, economics/finance, billing/coding/reimbursement, health policy, risk management, process improvement, leadership, operations, staffing, utilization management, patient satisfaction, and medical informatics, as well as other areas that may be relevant to their interests and capstone projects.

Ideal candidates have demonstrated strong interest throughout residency training in leadership, quality improvement, or operations.

Salary and benefits are set by the Department of Emergency Medicine and the University of California annually.

Clinical Responsibilities

The fellow will work 8 attending shifts/month, all 8 hours in length, at UCSF Medical Center.

UCSF Medical Center (Parnassus)

UCSF Medical Center is recognized throughout the world as a leader in health care, innovative medicine, advanced technologies, and compassionate care. US News and World Report consistently ranks UCSF on its top-ten list of best hospitals in the United States. Similarly, UCSF consistently ranks among the top in the country in NIH research grants. Research is well-balanced with education with UCSF serving as the training site for other premier residency programs. The Emergency Department at UCSF features a fully integrated EMR, is designated as a prehospital stroke and ST Elevation MI center for San Francisco, contains a 64-slice CT scanner, two state-of-the-art resuscitation rooms, and bedside ultrasound, and is the only Level 1 Geriatric Emergency Department in the Bay Area. The annual ED census of 41,400 consists of a high-acuity and complex patient population.

Education

The fellows will participate in national training courses (ACEP’s Emergency Department Directors Academy) and a dedicated Administrative Fellowship curriculum which includes topics from:

  • operations
  • quality improvement
  • patient safety
  • billing/coding/reimbursement
  • process improvement
  • informatics
  • innovation
  • patient satisfaction
  • observation medicine
  • EMS/Trauma

Fellows pursuing two-year programs will pursue a Master’s degree (masters of business administration, public health, or hospital administration). Please see below for more info.

Second Year Master's Degree Options

If the administrative fellow is interested in pursuing an advanced degree, such as UCSF’s Master of Science in Healthcare Administration and Interprofessional Leadership (MS-HAIL), they will discuss this with the fellowship program director in advance and will apply for the administrative fellowship with their proposal for a two-year fellowship. If accepted into the MS-HAIL program, the administrative fellowship will be a two-year fellowship. If the fellow is not accepted into the MS-HAIL program, the administrative fellowship will be a one-year fellowship.

Alternatively, if an applicant applies to and is accepted to another Master’s program of equal cost (such as UC Berkeley’s MPH Master’s in Health Policy and Management), then the department would fund that program instead.  This will need to be discussed on a case-by case-basis and approved by the fellowship director.

Research/Scholarly Activity Responsibilities

The admin fellow will complete a capstone project that will be agreed upon with the fellowship director.

The fellow is highly encouraged to conduct one or more IRB-approved research projects for publication in a peer-reviewed journal as part of their fellowship completion requirements. Other scholarly work, such as authoring presentations or book chapters, is also encouraged.
