Elective Offerings

For information on applying to the UCSF rotations as a visiting student, please visit the UCSF SOM Visiting Students website.

Clinical Toxicology & Pharmacology

Fourth year medical students on the 4-week Clinical Toxicology & Pharmacology Elective (EM 140.43) learn to assess clinical problems relating to the toxic effects of drugs and poisons. Students participate in case discussions of poisonings and drug overdoses and perform follow-up telephone calls on hospitalized patients.

EMS & Disaster Medicine

Students on the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Disaster Medicine elective learn about pre-hospital care in San Francisco's busy urban EMS system. First-hand experiences with paramedics and dispatchers teach students about critical patient management in the pre-hospital setting. Didactics focus on EMS structure, communication, and disaster management topics. Students design and complete a mentored EMS project during the rotation.

Emergency Medicine Ultrasound

This point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) elective will offer medical students the opportunity to build a solid foundation of knowledge of emergency ultrasound. For various (point-of-care ultrasound) POCUS applications, students will learn the appropriate indications, how to perform each study, how to interpret their findings, and how to integrate point-of-care ultrasounds (POCUS) into clinical care.
