Global Health Area of Distinction

The Global Health Area of Distinction provides education, mentorship, and support for residents in the Department of Emergency Medicine interested in pursuing careers in global health or learning more about global emergency medicine. This Area of Distinction meets several times a year to discuss global health topics that prepare residents:

  • For global health work and global health away rotations
  • To learn about clinical medicine in other settings and collaborate on global health research and projects

We collaborate with other Area of Distinction groups, including ultrasound, pediatric emergency medicine, social emergency medicine, and emergency medical services & disaster medicine, to coordinate combined sessions. Current global health elective sites offered to residents include:

  • Muhimbili Hospital, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
  • Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation, Saipan
  • Gallup Indian Medical Center, New Mexico (IHS site)
  • Shiprock- Northern Navajo Medical Center, New Mexico (IHS site)
  • Chinle IHS Hospital, Arizona

Past residents have also worked in Bhutan, Liberia, Rwanda, Malawi, Chiapas, Haiti, and Uganda. Travel to these countries depends on political stability and trainee-dependent agreements with partnering institutions.
