Residents will be paid according to the updated University of California salary scales, effective July 1, 2020:

$150 per month added to PGY-4 salary 

$1,800 added to PGY-4 salary 

Housing Allowance $1,100.89 added to monthly PGY 1-4 salaries $13,210.74 added to annual PGY 1-4 salaries

Additional Incentives

  • $1,100.89 monthly ($13,210.74 annually) taxable housing allowance (noted above)
  • Up to $1200 per year from the UCSF Housestaff Incentive Plan dependent upon performance on institutional and program-specific quality improvement metrics
  • Up to $1200 per year from the ZSFG Housestaff Incentive Plan depending upon performance on institutional and program-specific quality improvement metrics
  • Up to $250 reimbursement per year for UCSF residency education fund (e.g. textbooks) 
  • Up to $600 reimbursement per year for ZSFG book fund (e.g., journal subscription, stethoscope, etc.)
  • Up to $60 per 2-week period payment for Bilingual Translational Service only during clinical time at ZSFG 
  • Reimbursement for USMLE Step 3 examination fee
  • Reimbursement for California medical license fee & renewal
  • Membership to SAEM, ACEP, AAEM, and EMRA 
  • All residents will be funded to attend the national ACEP meeting as PGY-4s
  • Business cards

Each resident will receive a contract prior to starting residency.

Campus Life Services

Millberry Union is located on the north side of Parnassus Avenue, across from UCSF Medical Center. Millberry Union presents cultural, recreational, and fitness programs to the campus community and general public. Millberry Union also provides a variety of facilities and services including a fitness center, barbershop, gift store, flower stand, a variety of food service options, copy service, meeting rooms, music and entertainment rooms, and ticket services. These services are also available at Mission Bay.


Residents on duty have access to food services 24 hours/day at all institutions.

UCSF Medical Center

Residents have access to a variety of food services during the daytime. Debit meal cards are used at the Parnassus and Mission Bay campuses and are valid at a wide range of vendors. The hours of operation of the different food services varies among the numerous sites and also from weekday to weekend.

Zuckerberg San Francisco General

Food services are provided for housestaff who are on call at the hospital. Debit meal cards are used for meals at the ZSFG cafeteria. The hours of operation of the cafeteria may vary, but are well advertised. 


  • UCSF residents have access to online journals and medical search engines (eg. MD Consult, UpToDate) through the UCSF library and they can be accessed remotely.
  • The UCSF Library features the Kanbar Center -- an entire wing dedicated to state-of-the-art simulation, clinical skills labs, and telemedicine.
  • The Barnett-Briggs Library of Zuckerberg San Francisco General maintains a small collection on clinical medicine and health sciences.


Free shuttle bus service is available throughout the day (Monday through Friday) between all UCSF campuses. Schedules can be downloaded or accessed online.
