We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and adhere to their guidelines. We only accept applications through the Electronic Resident Application Service (ERAS). 

Our residency program will participate in the Unified Interview Release Date for the 2024-25 recruitment season:

  • Interview Invitation Notifications: October 16, 2024, 4pm PST (7pm EST)
  • Interview Scheduling Opens: October 17, 2024, 4pm PST (7pm EST)
 
Eligibility

An applicant for graduate medical education at UCSF must have:

  • A medical degree prior to residency / fellowship program start date from one of the following:
    • Medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); or
    • Colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); or
    • Medical schools outside of the United States or Canada that are recognized by the California Medical Board
  • A passing score on USMLE Step I (or NBOME equivalent)
    • In addition, a passing score on USMLE (or NBOME equivalent) Step II CK is required for all trainees beginning a UCSF GME program. To meet this requirement, applicants should submit their USMLE (or NBOME equivalent) Step II CK score by Feb 15th in order to be considered for our final rank list. Please review the UCSF GME Housestaff Information Booklet for more information about the eligiblity policy for all UCSF residency and fellowship programs. 

Visas: Our department can sponsor J-1 visas but cannot sponsor H-1B visas.

Application Requirements

In your application, we require at least the following:

  • Personal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation (minimum of 1 SLOE required)
  • Medical school transcript
  • USMLE (or NBOME equivalent) Step 1 score (prior to starting our residency program, you must have passed Step 1 and Step II CK)
  • MSPE (Dean's Letter)

Please note that Emergency Medicine faculty writing letters of recommendations should use the Council of Residency Directors (CORD) Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) form. This form can be accessed from the CORD website.
